News release: Spring prescribed burning operations on public lands
Medford, Or—With the increased temperatures, forest fuels are starting to dry out enough to allow spring prescribed burning operations to commence on federal lands in southwest Oregon. These conditions allow for safe burning operations. The primary objective is to protect communities from wildfire threat while restoring forest resiliency. Additional burns will occur through the spring as weather conditions allow.
Residents can expect to see smoke in the Ashland area and the Applegate Valley, in Waters Creek near Grants Pass, and the Willow Lake area, with some burning units of up to 350 acres planned starting approximately one week after warmer weather sets in. In the meantime, the Bureau of Land Management-Medford District has started to burn units in the lower elevations.
“Conducting prescribed fires is a key component in reducing hazardous fuels. Spring is one of the seasons that allow us to apply “good” fires of less intensity to the landscape. These actions help reduce the fuel loads that feed wildland fire starts. Our fire management personnel do their absolute best to minimize smoke impacts while working to protect our local communities from the threat of wildfire,” said Acting Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest Supervisor Dan Quinones.
